Trampolinist from North Stars Gymnastics
makes Olympic Games in Beijing

Based on her results at the World Trampoline Championships in Quebec City, Canada in November, 2007, Lenka Popkin has been named as only one of sixteen athletes in the world to participate in the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing, China. After merging with artistic gymnastics, the sport of trampoline made its Olympic debut in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. It followed with a sold out performance in Athens, Greece in 2004 and is now preparing for China this summer.

Lenka, a citizen of the Czech Republic, has had an illustrious career highlighted by her results as junior European champion, a top ten finish at World Championships and numerous World Cup event medals. Unfortunately, she had been unsuccessful in her previous attempts to qualify for the Olympics.

Lenka is trained by her husband, David Popkin. David is a former US team member whose athletic accomplishments may be highlighted by his sixth place finish at World Championships. Although David is a product of New Jersey, he attributes much of his knowledge of the sport to his time training in Belarus, a former Soviet Republic. After retirement from competition in 2000, David began his career as a coach. Many of the athletes have qualified for the US National Team.

The couple currently lives in Jersey City, New Jersey and commutes to Boonton daily where they train at North Stars Gymnastics.

Ramapo's Goldschrafe named gymnast of the year

Tuesday, December 4, 2007

BY JOHN CHRISTIAN HAGENY
For the Star-Ledger

Chelsea Goldschrafe's junior season was as good as gold.

After an uncharacteristic fall on beam and a disappointing sixth-place finish at the state finals as a sophomore last season, Goldschrafe came into her junior season at Ramapo of Franklin Lakes with nothing other than redemption on her mind.

"I came in really motivated," Goldschrafe said. "I came in looking to redeem myself."

With Washington Township's Sammi Jones atop the leader board with a morning-competition score of 38.425, Goldschrafe, a level-10 gymnast, entered the afternoon-competition with no knowledge of the score to beat.

"I had no idea what she scored," Goldschrafe said. "I knew she had a good meet based on the crowd reaction, but I had no idea what she scored. I didn't want to know. I think If I went out there with a number in my head it would have been more difficult."

Goldschrafe proceeded to post the best scores of the day on beam (9.7) and floor (9.75) en route to 38.625 points, edging Jones by the slimmest of margins to capture the state all-around title at the 2007 NJSIAA/Wedgewood Communications State Championships on Nov. 10 at Hunterdon Central in Flemington.

"It was a definitely a big monkey off my back," said Goldschrafe, who also captured the North Jersey, Section 1 (38.575) and Bergen County Tournament titles (38.5) this season. "I knew I had to hit all four of my events and stay clean to give myself a chance. I just took each event one at a time, tried to not overwhelm myself and have good energy.

"My goal coming into the season was to help Ramapo win and contribute as much as I could to the team. Winning the state title is an awesome feeling. There are a lot of great gymnasts in New Jersey who put in a lot of hard work year-round. It's an honor just to be up there with everyone so highly competitive. It feels great."

Goldschrafe's state final performance stamps her name in the record books alongside another prominent Chelsea -- three-time state champ Chelsea Steinberg (2004-'06) of Ridgewood -- as North Jersey, Section 1 once again produced the state's all-around champion.

"Chelsea was a great gymnast in high school," said Goldschrafe of her friend and former club teammate at North Stars Gymnastics Academy in Boonton. "It's awesome just to follow in her footsteps."

Ramapo fifth-year coach Donna Koval noted the sacrifices Goldschrafe made to compete internationally for her club while still finding time to be part of the team.

"I am so proud of Chelsea," Koval said. "She worked so hard for this title. Chelsea makes so many sacrifices for her sport and I am glad to see her given the recognition she deserves for her many accomplishments. This season was an experience we will both cherish."

"To be the first from my school to win a state title is a great feeling as well as a big accomplishment for Ramapo," Goldschrafe said. "I can't wait until next season."
