North Stars Gymnastics kicked off the new year by hosting its annual Garden State Classic meet from January 6-8, 2017. For some gymnasts, the Garden State Classic was the first meet of their 2016-2017 season, and for others, it was the first meet of their gymnastics career. Participating athletes included USA Gymnastics (USAG) Jr. Olympic gymnasts, USAG Xcel gymnasts, and United States Association of Independent Gymnastics Clubs (USAIGC) gymnasts. Altogether, 11 different gymnastics training centers entered in the meet.
On Saturday, gymnasts of the USAG Jr. Olympic levels 4-10 competed. Each gymnast representing North Stars contributed to the club having the highest team score for every level. Some of these gymnasts also held the highest individual score for their level on a particular event.
Level 4 winners were Ashley Holiday, Jazmine Holder, and Chien-Yun-Yang. Level 5 winners were Reese Smith and Dorina Pajtok. Level 6 winners were Sdala Scott, Morgan Blanchard and Kayleigh Hulings. Level 7 winners were Alana Walker and Kiera Metzger. Level 8 winners were Csenge Pajtok, Meredith Cappiello, Karina Lankamer, Kate Menake, Kate Vitolo and Nicolette Horton. Level 9 winners were Isabella Lin, Madison Vitolo, Emily Castiglia, Raine Smith, Delaney Sniffen and Hannah Loyim. Level 10 concluded Saturday's meet, and the winners were Nicola St Louis, Brooke Siter, Anneliese Silverman, Kaylee Quinn, Simone Banen, Kiara DeTommaso, Rachael Lukacs, Alonza Klopfer and Ellen (Ellie) Wylie.
On Saturday and Sunday, North Stars gymnasts of the Xcel Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond and Platinum levels competed. For all of the North Stars gymnasts competing in the Bronze level, the Garden State Classic was their first gymnastics meet. Alexa Sinopoli placed first in the Bronze level. Nina Aki placed first in the Silver level, and scored a 9.85/10. Gold level winners were Waring Parker, who scored a 9.8/10, Alexis Powell and Kourtnie Dwornikoski. Alyssa Cooper placed first in the Diamond level. Platinum level winners were Isabella Gray and Jennifer Kruszewski.
Also on Sunday, North Stars USAIGC Copper 1, Copper 2, and Bronze level gymnasts competed. These gymnasts practice one to two days per week at North Stars, and for many of them, the Garden State Classic was their first competitive gymnastics experience. Copper 1 level winners were Victoria Haviland, Mahek Desai and Ariana Carvajal. Copper 2 level winners were Alexis Silverstein, Melina Calicchio, Nisma Aly, Gauri Kshirsagar and Mara Bilenski. As for the Bronze level, the winners were Taylor Wallace, Kayla Hixon, Stephanie Bowden and Aartie Kalra.
“The athletes showed signs of both nervousness and excitement,” said owner of North Stars, Paula Gehman, “but they all did a fabulous job, especially those competing for the first time, and I’m glad we could give them this experience.”
